A woman from East London will complete the Regent’s Park 5K Run this Saturday in memory of her husband, who died last July.

Charlie Guidera, 41, married Neil on 8ᵗʰ May 2024. He had been diagnosed with an astrocytoma in 2012 and lived with the disease for more than a decade. When scans showed a recurrence of the tumour, the pair sped up their wedding plans. This revelation came only two years after Charlie herself was diagnosed with a colloid cyst.

Charlie said: “In April 2024, a routine MRI revealed that the tumour had progressed and the chemotherapy was not effective. The oncologist gently asked us when we might want to get married, and I just burst into tears. I knew we were running out of time.”

Neil was suffering with aphasia, a condition that affects speech, and subsequently struggled to say his vows. Only two months later, in July 2024, Neil died at the age of 41. Now, Charlie is preparing to complete the Regent’s Park 5K in aid of Brain Tumour Research on 27ᵗʰ June – the day after what would have been Neil’s 42ⁿᵈ birthday.

Along with her close friend Louise Miller-Chalk, Charlie has already raised more than £1,000 for our Centres of Excellence.
