Our Work in Northern Ireland
Events
We attend events at Stormont to further raise awareness of brain tumours and drive political action in Northern Ireland. We held a drop-in event in 2024, sponsored by Cara Hunter MLA (pictured), who we have been in contact with since she disclosed her own brain tumour diagnosis:
"It is an under-researched area across the UK, but together we can make a difference. That can't come soon enough for people like me who have had their own brain tumour diagnosis".
Coalitions
We are an active member of the Northern Ireland Cancer Coalition, working to ensure the unique needs of brain tumour patients are heard within devolved health policy. We work alongside other local cancer charities to present a united voice, advocating for the effective implementation of the Northern Ireland Cancer Strategy, improved workforce planning and long-term policy solutions to enhance outcomes across the region. We also work in partnership with Brainwaves NI to improve outcomes and amplify the voice of those affected by brain tumours across the region.
Brainwaves NI
Providing support services to children and adults with brain tumours since 1994, Brainwaves NI is Northern Ireland’s only volunteer-led brain tumour research and support charity. Its aim is to provide support for brain tumour patients, their families, and carers, raise awareness of brain tumours and fund vital research at the Patrick G Johnston Centre for Cancer Research, Queen’s University Belfast, to help find a cure for brain cancer.
Over a number of years they have provided more than £500,000 funding towards that vital research.
The charity is managed by an annually elected committee of volunteers dedicated to the belief that together we can make a difference to the lives of those affected by a brain tumour.
