On Saturday, on what should have been the 60th birthday of Kev O’Mahoney, the inspiration for our Fundraising Group In Kev's Memory, his older brother Ges (pictured above right with Kev on the left) stepped up to help the march to find a cure by taking on an incredible challenge to Race Across Wales.
Accompanied by his brother-in-law Jim and close friend Steve, with whom he has completed a series of previous impressive fundraising hikes, including up Ben Nevis and along the West Highland Way, Ges strode out from the Dovey Estuary covering the 80km to Montgomery on the English border in 16 hours, despite temperatures of up to 29 degrees. This time, Ges and Kev's nephew Joe also joined the trio for the epic challenge (see image below).
Ges said: “Kev was a much-loved brother. He died, aged 53, on my birthday in May 2019, just a year after his diagnosis with an aggressive brain tumour, leaving Annette, his wife, and their two daughters, Paige [pictured below with Kev and Annette] and Eve, who were then 22 and 20 respectively. "
“Saturday would have been Kev’s 60th birthday. He should be here, laughing, walking, celebrating. Instead, we were pushing ourselves to the limit in his memory – every step a tribute, every climb powered by love and grit."
Having placed eight tiles at our Centre of Excellence at the University of Plymouth earlier in the year, representing the equivalent of eight days of research sponsored, In Kev's Memory's fundraising total is now close to £30,000.
If you are inspired by Kev’s story and Ges’ Race Across Wales fundraiser, you can help the Fundraising Group bring the total days of research sponsored to 10 by making a donation to their fundraising page
