Brothers walk 120 miles in memory of beloved brain tumour mother-in-law

A pair of brothers from Sheffield have walked 120 miles in memory of a family member who died of a glioblastoma brain tumour only a year after diagnosis.

Tom, 41 (above left), and Matt Shiels, 43 (above centre), walked from St Luke’s Hospice in Sheffield to Chapel Stile in Cumbria in just six days, raising more than £2,800 in the process for Brain Tumour Research and St Luke’s. The duo took on the challenge in honour of Tom’s mother-in-law Judith Wilford, 67. A retired teacher, Judith’s love of walking and wildlife inspired Tom and Matt to fundraise with a walk.

In July 2022, Judith began experiencing persistent headaches and nausea. Hospital scans confirmed these symptoms were caused by a glioblastoma, and she was soon placed on a course of radiotherapy and chemotherapy. Despite continuing to volunteer throughout treatment, Judith was soon moved to St Luke’s Hospice, where she passed away in July 2023.

Judith’s daughter and Tom’s wife, Emily Shiels (pictured above with Judith), said: "It’s heartbreaking to know how underfunded research into brain tumours is. When Mum was diagnosed, there were hardly any treatment options – just time. That’s why we’re supporting Brain Tumour Research. Research means more options, more time and, one day, hopefully a cure."

Tom added: "The distance and route just made sense as a real challenge. Walking was such a huge part of who Judith was, and the Lake District is full of memories of her humour, her wisdom and the way she lit up every hillside we walked together. Doing this walk, especially with Matt by my side, felt like the right tribute.

“There were laughs, blisters and some very kind strangers along the way. I think Judith would have been proud – and definitely amused."

You can donate to Brain Tumour Research through their JustGiving page and help give more treatment options for patients.
