Plymouth researcher awarded prestigious Fellowship

One of the many strengths of our Centre of Excellence model is that it provides the long-term funding and secure environment for researchers to progress in their field and gain the experience they need to work up through the ranks and fulfil their true potential.

A member of our Centre of Excellence at the University of Plymouth (Research team, image above right and Director, Professor Oliver Hanemann, above left), and Clinical Oncologist at the University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust, Dr Sarah Kingdon (pictured below), has done just this. We are delighted that she has been awarded Scotland’s first dedicated Neuro-oncology Fellowship.

The Fellowship has come about through a new partnership between the Tessa Jowell Brain Cancer Mission and The Chief Scientist Office, with the aim of nurturing the next generation of future leaders in neuro-oncology. The 12-month Fellowship, which will take place within our newly established Scottish Centre of Excellence, jointly hosted by the Edinburgh Centre for Neuro-oncology and the Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Centre, will provide Dr Kingdon with extensive experience in brain tumour management and the research skills needed to lead high-impact clinical trials.

Not only does this Fellowship strengthen our aim to grow capacity in the brain tumour field, but it also represents a valuable opportunity for our researchers to work together across different Centres of Excellence. Movement between Brain Tumour Research Centres fosters the exchange of knowledge and skills, crucial for advancing research and improving outcomes for brain tumour patients.
