Simon, from Aspley Guise, near Milton Keynes, was a keen supporter of Brain Tumour Research. He was diagnosed with a brain tumour three years ago. He leaves two young children, Bevan and Honor.
Among the many tributes from the broadcasting world, was a tweet from close friend and former colleague Jo Whiley, who said: “We woke to the news that we have lost our beloved Willy aka Simon Willis and today our family is bereft… Willy was The Godfather to all our children and they completely and utterly adored him.” Zoe Ball wrote on Instagram: “Heartbroken to hear our dear friend Willy, Simon Willis from our Radio 1 Breakfast Show team passed away last night.” DJ Dave Pearce tweeted: “Sad to learn of the passing of my former @BBCR1 producer Simon Willis, he had a fun, infectious personality, we had so many laughs especially when I was doing the early breakfast show, he put 100percent into everything, a huge talent. Thoughts with his friends and family R.I.P”.
Simon visited our Centre of Excellence at Imperial College to find out about the work scientists are undertaking to find a cure. We also have fond memories of Simon taking part in the 2019 Walk of Hope along the Grand Union Canal in Bedfordshire. The Willis family raised an amazing £2,810.
Simon was also a regular member of the Brain Tumour Buddies, a support group which, pre-lockdown, used to meet regularly in Milton Keynes. Members of the Buddies have expressed their shock and sorrow at hearing the news of Simon’s passing on their Facebook group page.
We send our deepest condolences to Simon’s family and friends and look forward to the day when a cure is found for this devastating disease. May he rest in peace.
