Last year we instigated a project to get the UK lit up for brain tumours during Brain Tumour Awareness Month and specifically on the evening of Wear A Hat Day.
We targeted iconic buildings and landmarks requesting that they be lit up in pink (or pink and yellow) to raise awareness of the biggest cancer killer of children and adults under the age of 40. We were delighted that our reach extended from Exeter in the South West of England right up to Edinburgh in the East of Scotland (Edinburgh’s Camera Obscura pictured).
Not surprisingly, we had the biggest success where supporters themselves approached councils or turned to their MP or local mayor and shared their connection with brain tumours. Ardent Brain Tumour Research campaigners such as brain tumour patient Rory Burke enlisted the help of his MP to get Leeds civic buildings lit up and Nicki Hopkins’ approach led to Scunthorpe’s Church Square being illuminated in memory of husband Dave.
This year we are inviting our loyal supporters to get in touch with their local council, MP, mayor, or all three, sharing their story of how they have been affected by brain tumours and asking for a building or landmark to be lit up for a loved one.
