Danielle Harold who plays Lola Pearce – recently diagnosed with a brain tumour in the popular BBC soap EastEnders; and Max Bowden – aka Ben Mitchell – who lost his best friend to a brain tumour, will be playing central roles in our Member Charity Brain Tumour Research Campaign’s annual carol concert tomorrow (15th December) starting at 7.30pm.
During the carol service at All Saints Church, Fulham in London, Danielle will read a Christmas poem written by Roald Dahl and Max will sing White Christmas.
Max said: “I lost my best friend Maxwell Thompson two weeks after his diagnosis with a brain tumour last year – he was 31 – so this is a cause very close to my heart. We need better treatments and ultimately a cure for brain tumour patients.”
Danielle has spoken about the “massive responsibility” she feels in portraying the harrowing brain tumour storyline, for which the BBC has sought guidance from Brain Tumour Research to ensure it was interpreted as sensitively and realistically as possible.
Brain Tumour Research Campaign was set up by Wendy Fulcher, who is also chair of Brain Tumour Research, after she lost her husband John 10 months after his diagnosis with a glioblastoma (GBM) brain tumour. Brain Tumour Research and BTRC together opened the Centre of Excellence at Imperial College, London where researchers are working on a technique which could potentially make GBM tumours much more susceptible to radiotherapy.
