Couple whose marriage nearly “destroyed” by brain tumour join Walk of Hope

A couple who say a brain tumour nearly destroyed their marriage will join our Walk of Hope to help find a cure for the disease.

The bizarre host of symptoms which Andy Hampton experienced before his brain tumour diagnosis included him becoming distant and apathetic, and even falling asleep at the birth of his son, Henley, in May 2022. Over the course of a year, these symptoms continued and Andy became paranoid, thinking that his wife of three years, Gemma, was having an affair.

Eventually, it was discovered Andy’s episodes were being caused by a glioblastoma (GBM). Debulking surgery in May 2023 alleviated his symptoms and Andy underwent six months of combined radiotherapy and chemotherapy.

Now undergoing a second cycle of chemotherapy, Andy will join our Walk of Hope in Swanage on Saturday 30th September. He and Gemma have galvanised more than a dozen family members to join them and have already raised more than £650 on their JustGiving page

Gemma said: “Andy has really felt the fatigue that comes with every round of treatment. He has always been an active person and together we have been going out on family walks in preparation for the event at the end of September. This will be a real challenge for him. We know brain cancer is something we have to live with, for how long we don’t know, but we are determined to help make a difference to those facing their own diagnosis.”
