An eight-year-old boy has climbed Snowdon raising thousands to help find a cure for brain tumours after losing his father to the disease.
Oscar Moth was inspired to take on the amazing challenge after losing his dad, Piers, to a brain tumour earlier this year. Piers, father also to two daughters: seven-year-old Ella (known as Dizzy) and Ottilie, two, and husband to Laura, had been diagnosed with a brain tumour 10 years ago. Too deep in his temporal lobe to operate, Piers underwent chemotherapy and radiotherapy and was stable for eight years. Two years ago, it was found that the anaplastic astrocytoma had recurred and Piers underwent further chemotherapy to give him more time with his family.
Piers died aged 40 in March 2021, 10 days before Oscar’s eighth birthday.
Oscar (pictured at summit with mum Laura, and close family friends Felix Hughes and Rachel Rutt) has raised more than £4,000 so far.
Laura said: “Piers was the absolute best daddy our family could wish for, providing wrap-round care and school holiday cover while I worked full-time. He was brave and funny and the most kind and gentle soul. We all miss him more than you can imagine.
“I am so proud of Oscar. This is the first sponsored event he has done and the first time he has climbed a mountain. Before the COVID pandemic, he used to have weekly climbing lessons and always said he wanted to climb a mountain. Since losing his daddy, he said he wanted to raise funds for research so that other families don’t lose a mummy or daddy, or anyone else they care about.”
