A mum-of-two is fundraising to help find a cure after being diagnosed with a high-grade brain tumour.
Rachael Carter (pictured right), 46, was diagnosed with a grade 3 anaplastic astrocytoma in June 2019. She underwent surgery to remove the tumour, followed by radiotherapy and a seven-month course of chemotherapy. Rachael, who has lost close family friend Anthony Hard to the disease, was told her tumour might have been growing for five to eight years and is likely to grow back.
Now, she has joined a group of fundraisers who have been taking on a 10-day step challenge. The challenge, which started on 1st March as Brain Tumour Awareness Month got underway, was organised by Rachael’s friend Michelle Huckle (pictured left), a fitness instructor, and sees participants setting their own daily steps target.
The so-called ‘Brain Brigade’ has more than 150 participants signed up and between them they have already raised more than £4,000. Their challenge has been shared in the Mirror Online, South Wales Argus, Wales 247 and InYourArea.
Rachael said: “I met Michelle 10 years ago when I was doing one of her Zumba classes. When she approached me about fundraising for Brain Tumour Research, I was delighted to get involved. I’m aiming to complete 10,000 steps a day, which will be a challenge but hopefully achievable, as I’m trying to build up my fitness again after treatment.
“Taking on this challenge has provided me with some much-needed focus and it’s something really positive to get stuck into, all while raised money for this hugely important cause.”
