A primary school teacher will run the Royal Parks Half Marathon this Sunday dressed as a unicorn to raise funds for Brain Tumour Research.
Sophie Rollins will take on the 13.1-mile race wearing an inflatable unicorn costume chosen by her pupils. The half marathon route will take her through four of London’s eight royal parks – Hyde Park, The Green Park, St James’s Park and Kensington Gardens.
Sophie has been wearing the costume during park runs to train for the event. She said: “I can’t run properly in it – one side is shorter than the other and when it’s windy it whips around and the mane hits me in the face so it’s definitely harder. I’m just hoping it’s not too windy on Sunday.”
She is raising funds inspired by her mum, Jane Rollins, who was diagnosed with a meningioma on her 59th birthday in 2017. The tumour was successfully removed and Jane has since made a full recovery.
Sophie said: “We were very lucky as a family but when you discover someone you love isn’t very well you want to research it and Brain Tumour Research was the charity we turned to for information – it was our saving grace, really, which is why I run for it.”
