Mandy embarks on year of challenges

2 min read

A Devizes widow has embarked on a year of challenges after her husband died from a brain tumour less than two years after being diagnosed.

As well as taking part in our 10,000 Steps a Day in February challenge for the second year running, Mandy Calaz will row 125 miles on a rowing machine (the equivalent distance of Devizes to Westminster), pedal 847 miles on an exercise bike (the equivalent of Land’s End to John O’Groats) and is finalising plans for another challenge which will be the equivalent of the height of Everest.

It's inspired by her husband Mark who tragically died from a glioblastoma (GBM) in July 2021, aged 52.

Following Mark’s diagnosis, the couple started supporting and fundraising for Brain Tumour Research, taking on a Walk of Hope together. Just months after Mark’s death, Mandy set up a Fundraising Group which she called M & M Adventures.

“I miss Mark every minute of every hour of every day, but I promised him I would keep fighting and keep funding research so that other families don’t have to go through what we have. I want to make a difference to bring forward the day when more effective treatments and, ultimately a cure, are available for all types of brain tumours,” said Mandy.

She added: “I may be a little tired at the end of it, but this is such an important cause for me. Without research there’s nothing.”
