Brain surgery and science benefit from funding announcement

1 min read
Last week, we welcomed a group of Brain Tumour Research supporters and activists to our dedicated Research Centre of Excellence in West London.

Our Imperial College facility encompasses two sites and two disciplines – neurosurgery at Charing Cross Hospital and early-stage scientific research at Hammersmith Hospital. The surgical team at Charing Cross is led by neurosurgeon Mr Kevin O’Neill whilst the research team, led by Dr Nelofer Syed, is investigating various aspects of brain tumour biology.

Our pioneering partnership with Imperial College is now in its fifth year and has seen funding of over £200,000 being granted for 2018/19, bringing the total to-date to over £1 million.

In common with all of our Centres, we conduct a quinquennial (five-year) review of research progress made during our funding period. These reviews are carried out by an international team of expert peer reviewers.

We look forward to continuing our support for this vital work whilst encouraging the Centre to achieve further external funding to help them to build on the crucial foundation blocks we have laid.

We will be reporting back on the progress and discoveries being made at Imperial, what implications this could have for new and improved treatments for brain tumour patients, and in bringing us closer to a cure for brain tumours.
