Olympic medallist Sam Reardon’s mum, Marilyn, was diagnosed with a glioblastoma in 2018 and underwent a debulking surgery, followed by radiotherapy and chemotherapy. Sadly, she developed a skin infection which led to sepsis and her weakened immune system was unable to recover. Marilyn died in March 2019, aged 52.
In 2024, Sam stormed to victory in the 4x400m mixed and men’s relays to take to the podium twice at the Paris Olympics. He paid tribute to his mother as he collected his bronze medals, poignantly carrying a photo of Marilyn, who always held an unwavering belief that her son would one day become an Olympic champion.
Since her death, Sam and his family have worked closely with Brain Tumour Research, setting up fundraising events including a charity football match, bike rides and mountain hikes.
