Our annual flagship fundraiser is here, with hat-themed events taking place in schools, in workplaces and in communities across the UK, as people come together to put their hats on for hope and raise vital awareness of our important cause.
It’s not too late to take part and help fund the fight to find a cure for all types of brain tumours. Simply pop on a hat and make a donation. Don’t forget to share your photos on social media, using #WearAHatDay and tagging Brain Tumour Research, to encourage others to do the same.
Wear A Hat Day marks the culmination of Brain Tumour Awareness Month, our month-long programme of events to highlight the devastation caused by a disease that kills more children and adults under the age of 40 than any other cancer.
We’re grateful to all our supporters who have embarked on their own awareness-raising campaigns throughout the month of March. Among them is global soft drinks manufacturer Refresco UK, which has rallied behind two of its employees who tragically lost their son to a brain tumour, to raise funds and awareness.
Finlay – known to all as Fin – died in 2015, aged 11, just 17 months after being diagnosed with an aggressive brain tumour. Ten years on, during the year that would have seen him turn 21, his parents Penny and Wayne Church are uniting with their colleagues to dedicate a month of fundraising efforts to Brain Tumour Research.
Penny said: “Fin was full of life, funny, kind, and brave. When he was diagnosed, we were shocked to learn how little funding and awareness brain tumours receive.
“It means so much to Wayne and me to see our colleagues come together for a month to raise funds in Fin’s memory. We can’t do anything more for Fin, but we will fight until the day we die to try and make a difference for others facing this disease.”
Throughout March, Refresco’s Moments That Matter team held several fun and engaging activities, including a pancake-flip fundraiser on Shrove Tuesday, a mega raffle, and a ‘Guess the Bottle Caps’ challenge (a nod to Refresco’s soft drink production), all culminating in today’s company-wide Wear A Hat Day celebrations.
Sally-Anne Griffiths, HR Director for Refresco UK, said: “Our teams across Refresco really love fundraising for their favourite charities, but this one is very close to our hearts being in aid of a charity supported by Penny and Wayne in memory of Finlay.
“We are really honoured to assist Penny and Wayne, and Brain Tumour Research, and grateful for the chance to also raise brain tumour awareness for our teams.”
