We are deeply sorry to share the news that our supporter Neil Matheson has died, aged 36.
Dad-of-one Neil, from Dundee, was diagnosed with a grade 4 glioblastoma (GBM) in 2018. Initially told he only had 12 months to live, Neil went through gruelling surgery and cancer treatment to try to extend the time he had left with his young family. Last year he was given the impossible choice to either go ahead with further treatment and risk contracting COVID-19, or to postpone the treatment. Tragically, Neil’s treatment was delayed and in May doctors discovered the tumour had spread and was no longer treatable.
He died at home on 23rd December 2020, surrounded by his loved ones.
Neil’s wife Emőke said: “Neil fought so hard until the end. I am full of pain but I am also so proud of him; my beautiful husband and wonderful daddy to our five-year-old daughter, Isabelle. We miss him so much. He will forever be in our hearts.”
In September Emőke took part in a Walk of Hope, raising more than £1,800 for Brain Tumour Research. The couple also helped to raise awareness of the disease by sharing their story in the media, after Neil’s treatment was delayed. Articles were published in titles including The Daily Record, Herald Scotland and The Scotsman.
Our deepest condolences go to Emőke, Isabelle and all of Neil’s loved ones at this very sad time.
