A Kent mother who lost her daughter to a brain tumour a decade ago is hosting a Wear A Hat Day event in her honour, to raise money for Brain Tumour Research.
Elaine Williams, from Ashford (pictured below with grandsons Noah, left, and Harrison, right), who works as PA to the Head at Ashford Prep School, will lead the school’s 370 pupils and 70 staff members as they don their favourite hats and build awareness of our cause. Staff will also take part in a bake sale and coffee morning.
Elaine’s daughter, Holly Loundon, a mum of one, was just 29 years old when she died of a high-grade astrocytoma, 10 months after diagnosis. Holly’s son, Harrison, was six years old at the time, and faced with the injustice of leaving him behind, Holly committed to campaigning for more investment in research into the disease for the entire duration of her illness – a legacy continued by Elaine and Harrison since her passing.
“We found out about Brain Tumour Research when Holly was first diagnosed,” said Elaine. “She had this drive to raise awareness of the disease and wanted to show people what it meant to live with a brain tumour. I made a promise to Holly I would continue to do the same.”
Elaine first introduced the school to Wear A Hat Day shortly after Holly’s diagnosis in 2015, and it has continued to support our annual fundraiser ever since. To date, Elaine and her family have raised more than £19,000 for the Charity.
Wear A Hat Day takes place tomorrow, Friday 28th March. It’s easy to get involved: pop on a hat, take a selfie and make a donation. Then post your photo on social media, alongside the hashtag #WearAHatDay, asking your friends and family to make a donation to our cause, too. Don’t forget to tag us!
