A young boy, whose aunt died from a brain tumour, is taking part in our Swim Challenge in August to help find a cure.
Rory Crawford is aiming to swim a total distance of 5km in the pool at Nuffield Health’s Wakefield Fitness & Wellbeing Gym during August. His month-long challenge is inspired by his aunt Lydia Carfrae-Brohaska, who died from a glioblastoma (GBM) on 22nd May 2020, aged 36.
Lydia was diagnosed with a GBM in August 2018 whilst living in Texas. She underwent radiotherapy and chemotherapy, and also had access to pioneering treatment in the States not currently available on the NHS. Sadly, Lydia’s treatment stopped working in April 2020 and she flew home with her husband Stuart to spend her final weeks with her family.
A Fundraising Group called Lydia’s Wish was set up in her memory by the family, spearheaded by Rory’s mum Rosie, to raise funds for Brain Tumour Research and create a legacy for Lydia. To date, fundraising stands at more than £20,600.
Rory said: “Mummy’s cousin died of a brain tumour and I want to do something to stop it happening to other people and save their family and friends from the sadness I saw. I am amazed that friends and family have donated already and I have raised more than £300, double what I set out to do!”
“When I am swimming, my favourite thing is back-stroke.”
