Today, 9th April, marks the first anniversary of the passing of Aaron Wharton.
Aaron was just four when he was first diagnosed with a grade 3 anaplastic ependymoma in April 2020. He underwent four brain surgeries and endured chemotherapy and radiotherapy, but in January 2023 the tumour grew back and the cancer spread. Nicola and husband Lee were told there were no further treatments available.
After he passed away at the age of seven, Aaron’s mum Nicola said: “He was and will always be our golden superhero. His strength and determination will forever be an inspiration to us. His infectious smile and personality were adored by everyone he met.”
Since losing Aaron, Nicola has vowed to keep the memory of her “beautiful boy” alive and has set up the Fundraising Group Aaron’s Army to help in the fight to find a cure. To date the Group has raised an incredible total of more than £39,000 through a raft of fundraising events and challenges, but notably the Ellesmere Walk of Hope last September which Aaron’s Army led along with Fundraising Group Ella’s Army, attracting more than 700 people and raising in excess of £30,000.
Today, our thoughts are with Aaron’s family and friends and especially his parents who lost their only child. Their loss, along with all the thousands of losses experienced by other families we work with, spur us on in our quest to find a cure for this devastating disease.
