Congratulations to our Member Charity, The William Low Trust, which has held a successful 12-London-bridges fundraiser.
Around 80 supporters took part in the 10-mile walk which zig-zagged over a dozen London landmark bridges including Albert, Hungerford, Waterloo, Millennium and Tower Bridge, raising approximately £10,000.
William’s mum Helen said: “We are very grateful to all who joined and sponsored us for the walk. There was a great atmosphere, especially at the celebration party at the finish when we raised a glass of fizz to William. We were thinking of him as we passed a wealth of famous sights, while pondering on how we were funding life-changing research with every step.
“Many thanks to our chair, Richard Green for organising the event.”
The William Low Trust is sponsoring a PhD researcher at our Centre of Excellence at Queen Mary University of London.
William died six weeks before his 18th birthday in August 2017. He had been diagnosed with an aggressive medulloblastoma, the most common high-grade brain tumour in children, when he was just five.
Despite undergoing surgery and gruelling radiotherapy and chemotherapy, a scan revealed regrowth when William was 13. Further surgery, chemo and radiotherapy, as well as a stem cell transplant took place, but three years later new tumours were found in William’s spinal cord.
His family tried exhaustively to find more treatment options including appropriate drug trials, but nothing was suitable and William tragically passed away.
