A man is taking on an ultramarathon in the Jordanian desert to raise funds for Brain Tumour Research after his mum died from the devastating disease.
Luke Lambert was inspired to take on the Wadi Rum Desert Challenge ultramarathon in memory of his mum, Jenny. Along with seven friends, Luke began the five-day 250-kilometre challenge yesterday. Their epic endeavour will see them scale giant sand dunes during the day and wild camp under the stars at night.
Jenny was diagnosed with a grade 4 brain tumour in 2016. She underwent surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy, but sadly died in November 2019. Following her diagnosis, Jenny raised £8,400 for Brain Tumour Research.
He said: “My mum died from an aggressive brain tumour two years ago, so I wanted to make a difference and raise some money for Brain Tumour Research.
“It’s a great way of keeping mum's memory alive. She was a real sportswoman, playing tennis, hockey, and cricket at a high level. She also loved travelling and archaeology and always wanted to go to the world heritage site of Petra in Jordan.
“I wanted to take her there in her dying years, but we couldn't get her insured, so she never got to go. This adventure has real meaning for me.”
