Today saw the All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Brain Tumours propose its first-ever Inquiry into the economic and social impacts of this devastating disease.
The Inquiry, led by APPG Chair Derek Thomas MP, will investigate financial and social impacts on families and determine how, for example, the rising incidence of brain tumours will affect the NHS.
The APPG will shine a light on these impacts and will be hearing evidence from experts and the brain tumour community over the coming months. The Inquiry will neatly follow the publication of the Department of Health and Social Care’s Task and Finish Working Group report last week and complement the work.
MPs, peers and members of our community received an update from Professor Chris Whitty, Chief Scientific Adviser for the Department of Health. Having chaired the Working Group, he explained that the group has spent the last year closely analysing the complex issues around research into brain tumours in the UK.
Representing an important staging post in our journey to find a cure, the report’s conclusions included the agreement that dedicated brain tumour research centres are an effective way of expanding and developing research capacity and capability.
