First symposium of South West Brain Tumour Centre takes place

2 min read

The first symposium of the Brain Tumour Research-funded South West Brain Tumour Centre celebrated some of its achievements and was a fertile ground for stimulating discussion with clinicians from Derriford Hospital where the event took place last week.

Topics covered included the mechanism of tumour development, new drug targets, new biomarkers and brain tumour imaging. The opening address was delivered by the centre’s Principal Investigator Professor Oliver Hanemann (pictured delivering the symposium’s opening address), with keynote speeches from London-based experts in the field. As you would expect from a centre that focuses on researching low-grade tumours there was a particular focus on meningioma too.

Our Chief Executive Sue Farrington Smith MBE, who was present at the event, said “We are tremendously proud of our Plymouth centre and the research we fund there. Research into low-grade brain tumours has been the underfunded of the underfunded but as this event has demonstrated there is positive progress in this vital area and that is good news for patients, present and future. My congratulations to Professor Hanemann for a thought-provoking, informative and engaging symposium.”
