Golf Captain for 2024 Ian Greenwood, who tees off at Mid Kent Golf Club, chose to pitch his support for our Fundraising Group The Nick Cotton Foundation, when he took up his post.
Solicitor, Nick Cotton (pictured above with wife Rachael) was diagnosed with an aggressive anaplastic oligodendroglioma after suffering with excruciating headaches, just six months after he married his childhood sweetheart Rachael. He passed away aged 30, less than 10 months later, after surgery, radiotherapy and various types of chemotherapy failed to stop the progression.
Rachael, who set up The Nick Cotton Foundation to help find better outcomes for brain tumour patients, said: “Nick had four good months on avastin chemotherapy which gave me some very precious memories, including celebrating our 30th birthdays together with all our friends and family – my birthday is the day before Nick’s.”
Since Ian (pictured with Rachael and his wife Jackie) was inspired to fundraise for the cause through his friendship with Nick's parents, Mid Kent Golf Club has raised an impressive £8,000 for the charity, including £3,200 last week during a charity Golf Day in which 117 players, including members of the club, 20 of Nick’s friends and 19 people connected with Nick’s parents.
Ian said: “It was a perfect day with glorious sunshine after all the rain we’ve had, made special by the fact that Rachael and her son Samuel, as well as Nick’s parents Eileen and Mick were there too.
“Added to an earlier fundraiser and donations in money pots, as well as sales of wristbands and badges, I am proud to say that Mid Kent’s fundraising total is now around £8,000 – enough to sponsor the equivalent of three days of research.”
