A nurse who has been given the ‘all-clear’ after undergoing surgery to remove a brain tumour is taking part in our Jog 26.2 Miles in May challenge.
Fern Cameron, 24, was diagnosed with an astrocytoma in January 2021 after experiencing symptoms including loss of balance, double vision and mood changes. She underwent surgery to remove the tumour and, although surgeons were unable to say with certainty if everything had been removed, the operation went well. An MRI scan in October 2021 gave Fern the ‘all- clear’, which meant she didn’t need to have radiotherapy or chemotherapy.
Now, Fern is taking on the marathon challenge to raise funds for Brain Tumour Research to help find a cure for the disease. Her story has been shared in The Mirror and Metro.
Fern said: “I just wanted to do something positive. I’m not a runner at all, but my sister Niamh runs a lot so she’s doing the challenge with me.
“There is such a lack of awareness about brain tumours and people don’t recognise the symptoms.
“I’m doing this not just for myself, but also for all people who are battling against this devastating disease.”
