Hundreds of people across the UK took part in our favourite floral fundraiser as Wear A Hat Day with Flowers made its return.
Taking place at the end of British Flowers Week, this campaign puts a fun twist on our classic Wear A Hat Day. With the sun shining, temperatures soaring and lots of colourful hats and flowers on display, it certainly felt like it kickstarted our summer!
Getting involved was simple. Pair a hat with flowers in any way you like and host a fundraising event or donate to help us get closer to a cure for brain tumours. We loved seeing lots of photos on the day and wanted to share just a handful of those who took part.
Like Whitley Lodge First School, where staff and pupils donned their hats in memory of Lee Patterson, who died from a glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) in November 2020. There was a spectacular array of hats on display and we especially like the sunflower adorned choice worn by Lee’s wife Kathy (pictured bottom right), who works as a higher level teaching assistant at the school.
Claire Green tagged us in this fabulous photo on Twitter ahead of wearing her elegant choice to a Wear A Hat Day with Flowers event with her choir. We’re sure they all looked and sounded amazing!
It was an afternoon of sunshine and smiles at Lydgate Lodge Care Home. There was live entertainment from a local singer who performed wartime songs and residents created their own floral hats. Our Community Fundraiser Saddia paid them a visit and said: “It was great day, with such a buzzing vibe and lots of laughter. All in all, a joyful, fun event!”
Check out Haleema Ali’s selection of hats, including one with flowers she handcrafted herself using a range of techniques. Haleema is an ‘artivist’ – an artist who uses their craft as a form of activism – and she created these hats inspired by the memory of Amani Liaquat, who died from a GBM in February, aged 23. Her creations incorporated a purple flower for Amani as purple was her favourite colour.
It was also a great opportunity to raise awareness about brain tumours and that’s exactly what Alison Goodrum did when she was interviewed on BBC Radio Norfolk on the big day. Milliner Alison told presenter Edd Smith about her diagnosis with an acoustic neuroma, why she was taking part in Wear A Hat Day with Flowers and the gorgeous hat she created especially for the occasion. It was a special day for our Chief Executive Sue Farrington Smith MBE as she and husband Justin donned their flower-adorned hats for a day at the races to mark their 27th wedding anniversary. Congratulations Sue and Justin!
