The University of Plymouth – home to one of our Brain Tumour Research Centres of Excellence – is in the running for the most coveted accolade in the Times Higher Education Awards 2022.
Its place on the University of the Year shortlist acknowledges the University’s international reputations for marine research and teaching, as well as decades of focus, investment, and impact.
Our Centre of Excellence at the University of Plymouth housed in the John Bull Centre (pictured) is one of Europe’s leading research institutes for low-grade brain tumours. Led by Professor Oliver Hanemann, the research team has a world-leading track record in researching low-grade brain tumours occurring in teenagers and adults.
Recent discoveries made by the team include a breakthrough which could see drugs developed to treat AIDS and HIV repurposed to treat patients with meningioma and acoustic neuroma; progress in research into meningioma, potentially translating from bench to bedside, for a condition for which currently the only treatment is surgery and radiotherapy; and the publication of a paper on neurofibromatosis (NF) – a genetic condition closely linked to brain tumours.
The Times Higher Education Awards are open to anyone involved in higher education across the UK and Ireland, and aim to exemplify the talent, dedication and innovation of individuals and teams across all aspects of university life.
The 2022 winners will be revealed at a ceremony in London this November. Read more online here.
