Good luck to our amazing supporters running the Brighton Marathon today!
More than 12,000 runners will take to the streets today, following the 26.2-mile course which snakes its way through the city centre, along the glorious seafront and finishes at the iconic Madeira Drive in front of thousands of cheering spectators.
Amongst those running for Brain Tumour Research is Beth Beamer (pictured left). She is lacing up her trainers inspired by a much-loved school friend’s ‘courageous’ teenage daughter, who is currently undergoing treatment for a brain tumour.
Ruby-Tuesday O’Brien (pictured right) was diagnosed with a brain tumour in April last year which was later identified as a grade 1 pilocytic astrocytoma. The 13-year-old underwent an emergency operation to fit a shunt to drain excess cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) followed by a craniotomy seven weeks later and she is now half way through an 18 month-course of chemotherapy.
Beth, who had considered doing a marathon at the age of 40 but cut her training short when she realised she didn’t enjoy running, hopes to complete the marathon in under five hours. She said: “Ruby’s story moved me so much and I realised that the marathon is a platform I can use to raise money for Brain Tumour Research. If not now, then when? Time’s running out and we’ve got to get in that arena.”
