Today we are thinking of the family and friends of Finlay Church on what should have been his 18th birthday.
Fin was just 11 years old when he died from a glioblastoma multiforme (GBM). In the 17 months that followed his diagnosis, Fin underwent neurosurgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy, and took part in trials to try to prolong his life. Tragically, nothing could save him and Fin passed away on 25th November 2015, leaving his parents, Penny and Wayne, and siblings, Kenzie and Tegan.
During his illness, Fin dedicated himself to fundraising, helping to raise more than £100,000 for Brain Tumour Research and the Birmingham Children’s Hospital, and was named a Child of Courage in the Pride of Birmingham Awards.
To mark Fin’s 18th, Penny and Wayne are encouraging friends and family to “buy him a drink” and donate to Brain Tumour Research, to celebrate their beloved son’s life. His parents are also taking part in Jog 26.2 Miles in May and on Friday 3rd June, they will host a stall at a Jubilee-themed picnic in the park.
Penny said: “Ever since Fin was diagnosed and after his death, we have campaigned and fundraised tirelessly to help find a cure for the disease that took away our precious son’s life.
“It’s always hard when there is a significant date coming up, and this year is no different. Our friends, family and local community have been incredible over the last seven years and more, and we are touched to be joining in the Jubilee celebrations at the same park where Fin claimed the Guinness world record for the number of teddy bears in a line.”
