A two-day workshop entitled ‘Accelerating Progress in Drug Delivery’ concluded at the University of Nottingham yesterday.
Organised by the Children’s Brain Tumour Drug Delivery Consortium (CBTDDC), the workshop was attended by representatives of scientific and clinical academia, industry and funding bodies. Brain Tumour Research was very pleased to have a place at the table.
The CBTDDC was launched in March 2017 to:
- Raise awareness of the challenge of drug delivery in brain tumours, among academic/clinical communities, industry, patient groups, charities, funders and regulatory bodies
- Initiate and strengthen international, multi-disciplinary researcher collaborations.
The consortium’s ambition is that by combining expertise, they will accelerate the development and translation of drug delivery systems to target brain tumours.
The focus of this week’s workshop was on clinical trial readiness for paediatric CNS drug delivery with challenges being discussed including: a lack of specific funding for prototype development and/or scale-up for clinical trials; difficulties in navigating the regulatory landscape; lack of accurate preclinical models; increased need for multi-centric working; consensus on repurposed drug candidates to incorporate into delivery systems.
Following an intense but illuminating couple of days exploring these challenges the output will be the creation of a ‘Roadmap’ document for preclinical to clinical translation, which will be freely shared widely with the neuro-oncology research community.
