A milliner who underwent surgery to remove a brain tumour is celebrating being given a new lease of life by supporting Wear A Hat Day with Flowers taking place this Friday.
Alison Goodrum, also a professor at the Norwich University of the Arts and a dress historian, was diagnosed with an acoustic neuroma in 2018 after years of suffering with headaches.
She had a 12-hour craniotomy in April 2019 to resect the tumour which was wrapped round her hearing and balance nerve. It left her deaf in one ear and she had to learn to walk again. Alison still suffers with headaches from time-to-time, as well as balance issues and can’t go out at night as she needs visual references to keep her upright, but nevertheless she considers herself as one of the lucky ones.
Alison, whose millinery business goes under the name of Goodrum & Merryweather, said: “Learning how lucky I am compared to so many other brain tumour patients, has prompted me to use my skills as a milliner to support Wear A Hat Day with Flowers. I have made a hat specially for the occasion in Brain Tumour Research pink, employing a new technique to me, which uses brim reed and gauzy petals made from organdie fabric to give a delicate, dangling, effect. I’ll be wearing it on the day to raise awareness and making a donation.”
