A team of gym goers swapped treadmills for tricky terrain as they took on an ultramarathon challenge to help find a cure for brain tumours.
Members of Bedfordshire-based Hunt Fitness tackled the North Downs Ultra last Saturday (27th July), conquering a 50km loop around the Surrey hills and countryside. The fitness fanatics’ fundraising was inspired by Mark Smith, the late brother of former Hunt staff member Sara Wiegand.
Mark (pictured below with Sara) was diagnosed with a glioblastoma (GBM) in February 2014, after suffering from vacant spells and seizures. He had radiotherapy and chemotherapy, but died aged 49, just two years after his diagnosis, in March 2016.
The 18-strong team was made up of walkers with ages ranging from their late 20s to mid 60s. They raised an incredible £10,700 for Brain Tumour Research and two other charities, The Saracens Foundation and Brick by Brick.
Gym running coach Steve Cummins, who led the team, said: “Unfortunately Sara couldn’t join us for the challenge as she is recovering from a knee surgery, but she was part of our training when injury allowed. I know that she and her family are delighted that we are keeping Mark’s memory alive whilst continuing to raise awareness of the disease.”
Since Mark’s death, Steve and the team have taken on a handful of endurance challenges as well as joining in with our annual Wear a Hat Day. Steve is also currently running an auction of rare sports memorabilia including signed sport shirts and signed notes from sports commentator Nick Mullins, which he hopes will raise £2,740 to sponsor a day of research at one of our Centres of Excellence.
