Beloved broadcaster Davina McCall has announced that she is undergoing surgery today to remove a brain tumour.
The TV presenter known to millions since fronting hit reality show Big Brother and more recently as a crusader for empowering and educating women about the menopause, Davina, 57, has been diagnosed with a benign tumour called a colloid cyst.
The mum of three shared the news of her shock diagnosis on social media this morning. She said: “A few months ago, I did a menopause talk for a company and they offered me a health scan in return, which I thought I was going to ace. But it turned out that I had a brain tumour.
“It fills the space, its 14mm wide and it needs to come out because if it grows, it would be bad. So I’m having it removed via a craniotomy.
“Say a prayer for me. I’m not worrying too much, I have all the faith in the world in my surgeon and his team. I’ll see you on the other side.”
Davina’s heartfelt post quickly garnered attention from supporters and media outlets including BBC News.
A close friend of Davina’s and our newest Patron, Pete Waterman has faced his own heartbreak due to the disease after his son Paul died of a brain tumour in 2005 aged 33.
On hearing the TV star’s news, Pete said: “As Patron of Brain Tumour Research, I'm truly floored to hear the news about my good friend. Sending all my love from myself and our family at Brain Tumour Research. This is a truly devastating disease and we are wishing Davina all the very best. You are a fighter and we will fight this together alongside you. We are all here for you. All my love Davina, to you and your family.”
