Thousands raised in memory of Nick Cotton

A golf captain from Kent has raised more than £16,000 with a year of fundraising events, inspired by the son of family friends who died from a brain tumour.

Nick Cotton, the inspiration for our Fundraising Group The Nick Cotton Foundation, passed away, aged 30, from an aggressive anaplastic oligodendroglioma. His diagnosis, after suffering with excruciating headaches, came about just six months after he married his childhood sweetheart, Rachael (pictured above with Nick).

Nick underwent emergency surgery to remove as much of the tumour as possible, before undergoing a six-week course of radiotherapy and chemotherapy. Sadly, Nick’s tumour returned and even a change in chemotherapy failed to halt the regrowth.

Rachael said: “Nick had four good months whilst on avastin, which gave me some very precious memories: we went to our friends’ wedding in Malta, to Spain and made many other trips too. We also celebrated our 30th birthdays together with all our friends and family – my birthday is on 18th April, followed by Nick’s the very next day.”

Poignantly, in April this year, Nick should have turned 40, but instead, Rachael was left to celebrate her 40th without him and remember the happy times they had together.

Through his friendship with Nick’s parents, Mick and Eileen Cotton, Ian Greenwood (far right in above image) was motivated to choose Brain Tumour Research as his Charity of the Year when he became Captain at Mid Kent Golf Club in Gravesend in October last year. He organised a charity fundraiser each month at the club, including a week of golfing events in July, resulting in an incredible sum of more than £16,000 being raised in Nick’s memory.

We are very grateful to Ian and Mid Kent Golf Club for their amazing fundraising efforts which will help make a difference in the fight to find a cure for the biggest cancer killer of the under 40s.
