Remembering our Patron Theo Burrell

We are heartbroken to share that our Patron, Theo Burrell, has died at just 39 years old, from glioblastoma.

Theo was a force of nature, passionately campaigning to end inequalities for brain tumour patients and fundraising to power life-changing research. After her diagnosis in 2022, she knew that her own story would likely end only one way, but she was absolutely determined to make a difference for others.

Our CEO, Dan Knowles, said: “We are heartbroken that we have lost the phenomenal, determined and truly inspiring Theo Burrell to this devastating disease. She was always very open about her prognosis and knew from the outset her cancer was terminal, but she was absolutely determined to make a difference for others. She constantly inspired us with how big her heart was and we will continue on our mission, driven by everything she taught us. Our thoughts are with her family, her friends and with all those who had the privilege of knowing her.”

Theo became a Patron of Brain Tumour Research in 2023 and played a pivotal role in helping us launch the Scottish Brain Tumour Research Centre of Excellence where research is focused on moving new treatments for glioblastoma into clinical trials.

She supported our Wear A Hat Day and Walk of Hope campaigns, took part in fundraising challenges, and hosted her own events, including an exclusive whisky tasting at The Caledonian Club in London. Her impassioned speech about living with glioblastoma will never be forgotten by those who attended our gala dinner where we marked our 15th anniversary and launched our Closer to a Cure impact report in March 2025.

During her treatment, including undergoing further surgery and chemotherapy for recurrence of her tumour, she remained active in campaigning for better outcomes for brain tumour patients, including during a tour of the Scottish Centre with then Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, Wes Streeting, in March this year. Just days later, Theo also joined us at Holyrood where she supported the launch of our Manifesto for Scotland.

Theo leaves her long-term partner Alex, whom she married in March this year, the couple’s young son, her parents Ian and Marion, and brother Tom.

Our thoughts are with all who loved Theo at this difficult time. She will be forever in our hearts.
