We’re proud to announce that Professor Tony Marson has joined Brain Tumour Research as the new Chair of our Scientific and Medical Advisory Board (SMAB), a pivotal group that guides our research strategy and ensures we’re investing in the most promising science to drive progress towards a cure for all types of brain tumours.
A globally-respected leader in epilepsy research and clinical neurology, Professor Marson brings a wealth of experience and a deep commitment to improving outcomes for people affected by neurological conditions.
He said: "It’s an honour to take on this role with Brain Tumour Research. I’m delighted to have the opportunity to bring my experience and skill set to the SMAB, which plays a crucial role in shaping the excellent research supported by the Charity, as well as building capacity to truly make a difference, through its Centres and other activities. Together, we will push boundaries and accelerate progress towards better treatments and, ultimately, a cure.”
Professor Marson is Professor of Neurology and Dean of the Institute of Systems, Molecular and Integrative Biology at the University of Liverpool. He also serves as an honorary consultant neurologist at The Walton Centre NHS Foundation Trust, where he has gained extensive experience in managing epilepsy across the patient pathway. Today, he is recognised internationally as a leading authority on epilepsy and its treatment.
As Chair of the SMAB, Professor Marson brings world-leading expertise in clinical and translational research where the focus has been on team science. For example, he has led the largest multicentre randomised controlled trials in epilepsy – results of which underpin clinical management and guidelines around the world. He’ll draw on this experience to help shape our research portfolio, ensuring it is driven by robust science and clinical relevance.
The Brain Tumour Research SMAB plays a vital role in guiding our research strategy. Its members – leading academics and clinicians from around the world – provide expert oversight of our Centres of Excellence and Funded Initiatives, helping us identify the most promising areas for future investment.
With Professor Marson at the helm, we’re excited to see the impact of our funded research grow – asking bold questions, funding transformative research, and keeping patients and their families at the heart of everything we do.
Please join us in giving a warm welcome to Professor Tony Marson. We’re thrilled to have him on board and excited for the journey ahead.
