We are thinking of all who loved Dave Hopkins today on what should be his 50th birthday.
The inspiration for our Fundraising Group Team Hopkins – Winning for Did, Dave (aka Did) was diagnosed with a glioblastoma in September 2020 after two weeks of symptoms, which included a flicker in his eye and a dull feeling in his head.
Dave (pictured below with wife Nicki) underwent the standard NHS treatment of surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy. Crowdfunding also enabled him to access pioneering treatment in Germany but, sadly, nothing could save him and Dave passed away 14 months later, on 6th November 2021.
Since losing her beloved husband, Nicki and family set up Team Hopkins – Winning for Did, which has raised an incredible £56,000 in his name. Running the London Marathon was just one of a host of fundraising enterprises Nicki has been a part of. Ahead of her first ever marathon, Nicki said: “Did always said that I never stuck at running. It’s now his strength and determination that he showed during his illness that keeps me going and I want to show him that I can do this. I think he’d be really proud of me. Did loved life so much, so I know that he would love what we’re doing.”
Nicki also became a passionate campaigner for greater investment into research to find a cure. In 2023, she went to No 10 Downing Street, where then-Prime Minister Rishi Sunak recognised Nicki as a Charity Champion after she had been nominated by her MP at the time, Holly Mumby-Croft (pictured below right with Nicki).
Nicki celebrated her own 50th birthday last month with a Facebook Fundraiser for the charity, saying: “It’s a privilege denied to my gorgeous husband and many others. #50andfabulous #positivevibesonly2025.”
We certainly think the legacy Nicki is creating, along with Did’s children Dylan and Lydia and their daughter Sydney, will be making Did proud.
