A family is set to run the Robin Hood Half Marathon to raise money for Brain Tumour Research in memory of their beloved father who died from the disease.
Described by his son, Edison (pictured above right with his dad), as the “healthiest person” he’s ever known, the first sign something was wrong with Zaim Hysa (above centre and above left with his sons) was when he suddenly collapsed at home in September 2018. The father of five was taken to hospital, where an MRI scan revealed a mass on his brain.
Edison said: “Dad underwent surgery; thankfully, the surgeons were happy with how it went. Afterwards, Dad said he felt like there was more space in his head because there was less pressure.”
Zaim had radiotherapy for two months after he had recovered from the surgery. But in March 2019, the family was told there was nothing else that doctors could do.
Zaim passed away just eight months after his diagnosis, in May 2019, aged 63.
Next month, Zaim’s sons, Edison, Lulzim and Ismet, grandson Klodian, and nephew Elton are taking on the Robin Hood Half Marathon. They are supporting Brain Tumour Research to help bring hope to other families affected by this devastating disease.
“I'm doing this for Dad. I couldn't help him but at least I'm doing something for others facing this diagnosis. I hope a cure is found so other people don't experience what we’ve experienced. Brain tumours destroy people and their families. When I looked at Dad each day, he was just suffering and suffering. I want to raise as much money as I can to do something positive,” Edison added.
