One in three people knows someone affected by a brain tumour, and it is estimated that 100,000 people in the UK are living with a brain tumour or the long-term impacts of their diagnosis. Yet, research into the disease remains devastatingly underfunded.
Brain Tumour Research is working tirelessly to change this. And today, the Charity publishes its new five-year Research Strategy, outlining how it will use the funds it raises to drive research to get closer to its vision to find a cure for all types of brain tumours.
From Discovery to a Cure: Our Research Strategy 2026-2031 builds on more than 17 years of impact, during which time Brain Tumour Research has invested £37.5 million directly in research, supported 315 research personnel and contributed £79.2 million to the national investment through our funding and leveraged funding by our Brain Tumour Research Centres of Excellence.
Over the course of its new five-year strategy, the Charity will invest £24.3 million into research focused on three connected strategic aims:
- Grow research capacity and infrastructure
- Advance knowledge and deliver breakthroughs
- Accelerate treatment development
The strategy ensures that the Charity continues to fund world-class research that is aligned with patient priorities while creating a favourable research environment in the UK, driving innovation and amplifying the impact of our funding. Dr Karen Noble, our Director of Research and Policy, said: “Through the strategic allocation of our resources, we are strengthening the conditions for innovation, collaboration and scientific progress. We are accelerating the development of new treatments to improve outcomes for people affected by brain tumours. We are striving towards a future where a brain tumour diagnosis is no longer defined by uncertainty, distress and limited options, but where patients have hope, personalised care pathways and a realistic expectation that they will get better.”
