More than 50 MPs have written to Chancellor Rishi Sunak urging the UK Government to back a medical research fund designed to reverse the devastating impact on Covid-19 on research into the UK’s biggest killers including cancer, heart disease, coronary heart disease and dementia.
The Life Sciences Charity Partnership Fund has been developed by the Association of Medical Research Charities (AMRC) which represents more than 150 medical research charities, including Brain Tumour Research, helping them to produce high quality research.
The move has been covered by the media today including The Guardian and on social media using #ResearchAtRisk.
Aisling Burnand, Chief Executive Officer of the AMRC said: “The UK’s world-leading research and development sector is one of our biggest strengths as a nation, stimulating new discoveries and playing a central role in advancing our economy, social wellbeing and health. Medical research charities play an integral role within that research eco-system.”
Brain Tumour Research is among 100 charities, including the British Heart Foundation, Cancer Research UK, Diabetes UK, Alzheimer’s Research UK and Great Ormond Street Hospital Children’s Charity, supporting the fund which would bridge an expected gap in research funding for 2020 to 2021.
