88 Squats a Day to bring hope

Pete Monaghan who, along with his family, set up our Fundraising Group Elly’s Herd, signed up to our challenge to complete 88 Squats a Day in July with his wife Rhona (pictured with Pete above centre).

Pete’s mum Elly (pictured above right) was diagnosed with a glioblastoma after slurring her words and sounding confused. She died 14 months later, two years ago this month. Pete, along with his dad, brother and sister, was devastated when the chemotherapy treatment Elly was undergoing had to be halted after just one-and-a-half cycles and they were told no other treatment was available.

“We set up Elly’s Herd to create a legacy for Mum. We don’t want other families to find themselves in the same treatment dilemma as us with no answers,” Pete said.

Pete and Rhona usually do their squats in the evening after work in two sets of 44 and try and mix them up through adding in weights or even jumps! The couple post regularly on their social media platforms with video footage of their challenge, accompanied by stats and facts on brain tumours. They want to raise awareness of how devastating brain tumours are to families and how vital it is to raise funds to increase research and thereby bring about better outcomes for patients.

Sunday’s post included the graphic above and the following comment: “Day 19 done yesterday. No video footage as they were done after a day of rugby, Guinness and Irish craic.” The pair were in Dublin over the weekend!

Good luck to everyone with their 88 Squats a Day challenge.
