Woman overcomes heartache to help fund vital research

A woman who suffered a heart attack after losing her husband to a brain tumour is overcoming her physical struggles to take part in our 99 Miles in November challenge, which launches today.

Sue Grigg, from Lee-on-the-Solent, had a cardiac arrest just hours after her husband Geoff’s funeral. Geoff died in June 2021, five weeks after a shock brain tumour diagnosis. His heartbroken wife Sue was left reeling from the speed with which the disease took hold – and from the lack of funding for research into brain tumours in the UK.

Geoff began showing signs of memory loss in February 2021, initially believed to be an indicator of Alzheimer’s disease. But after Geoff’s condition worsened, an MRI scan revealed a glioblastoma (GBM).

He was told by doctors to expect up to six months but deteriorated rapidly. Sue, who now lives with a stent and struggles with disability issues, holds the shock of Geoff’s quick decline and sudden passing responsible for her own health issues.

Despite her physical challenges, Sue has signed up for 99 Miles in November to raise money to fund life-saving research.

The challenge encourages participants to cover 99 miles throughout the month by any means – swim or cycle, run or row, climb or canter. You can even choose to split the distance between friends, family and colleagues.

Sue said: “There are so many unanswered questions to what happened to Geoff, which is why funding more research into the disease is so vital. What could be more important than making diagnoses quicker and potentially saving lives?”

You can sign up to take part in 99 Miles in November here and help bring hope to the thousands of families affected by this devastating disease.
