The Queen formally delivered her Speech to Parliament, opening the next parliamentary session, yesterday morning.
The speech was encouraging for the Life Sciences sector and set out the Government’s ambition for the UK to be a leader in the area.
In a briefing document released to coincide with the speech, Boris Johnson said: “My Government will build on the success of the vaccination programme to lead the world in life sciences, pioneering new treatments against diseases like cancer and securing jobs and investment across the country.”
Specifically, the document says: “The UK is already one of the best places in the world for Life Sciences companies to do business, but we are committed to making the UK a global science superpower that attracts the best people and businesses from across the world.”
The document continues that the learnings from the pandemic will help “build on these strengths to discover the treatments for other diseases such as cancer, Alzheimer's and heart disease” and in turn this will “deliver improved outcomes for patients across the UK”.
The Prime Minister added: “My ministers will oversee the fastest ever increase in public funding for research…” and there is a commitment to “making the UK a global superpower, with a world leading research and development environment. Innovation is a key pillar of our approach to tackling the effects of the pandemic and levelling up the UK.”
Hugh Adams, our Head of Stakeholder Relations, said: “Of course we are encouraged to hear talk of the UK’s position as a global scientific superpower and the will is definitely there to fund innovative projects. As campaigners, it is our job to make sure we bring parity to funding for brain tumour research because, as our community knows all too well, successive Governments have failed brain tumour patients through inadequate levels of research funding into this devastating disease
