Get noticed by generating your own PR

Activity and visibility is the key to reaching a wide audience to tell them about your fundraising. Here are our top tips to help you create a buzz around your event.

1. Set up a fundraising page

JustGiving and Virgin Money Giving are really quick to set up so you can start collecting donations straight away.

Remember to:

  • Include your story and photos to show why the cause is important to you.
  • Open your page early to give yourself the maximum amount of time for donations.
  • Set yourself a fundraising target.

2. Use social media

Remember to:

  • Tag us in your Facebook @BrainTumourResearch, Twitter and Instagram posts @braintumourrsch
  • Use photos and videos to tell your story and engage your followers.
  • Engage with other people in the brain tumour community. Use relevant hashtags to help spread your message as far as you can.
  • Contact your local newspapers / radio stations / TV news

3. Contact your local newspapers/ radio/ TV news

Remember to:

  • Research your area – find out what local newspapers, magazines and radio stations write and talk about.
  • Call local media to find out who covers local events or charity fundraising. If you are having an event, invite them to come along. Tell them your story – they’ll be interested in why you are fundraising.
  • Write a press release and send it out to your local media. Journalists might not always have time to talk to you on the phone so sending them a press release can often be an easier option for them.
  • Make sure the press release is no more than one page long and includes the words ‘press release’
  • Include a simple but catchy headline to attract attention. A short first paragraph should briefly explain why what you’re doing and why it is newsworthy. Include the date of the event and a link to your fundraising page, as well as your contact details.
  • We have a dedicated PR team who can help: contact them by emailing media@braintumourresearch.org

4. Think big! Why not contact a live national radio station or TV show to ask for a ‘shout out’?

Some ideas:

  • Contact the Zoe Ball Breakfast Show or the Sara Cox Drivetime Show on BBC Radio 2: email zoeball@bbc.co.uk  / sara.cox@bbc.co.uk , tweet @bbcradio2 or send a message on Facebook http://www.facebook.com/BBCR2/
  • Get in touch with Holly and Phil at ITV’s This Morning: thismorning@itv.com
  • Are you in the BBC Radio 1 demographic? Contact Greg James’ Breakfast Show greg.james@bbc.co.uk or text during the show 81199.
