Members of Bearsted Cricket Club got together last weekend to bike, trek and run the equivalent of the distance from John O’Groats to Land’s End via their home ground in Kent. They are hoping that their fundraising reaches the magic £2,740 in order to sponsor a day of research.
Richard Luxton, 52, a playing member of the club for 25 years as well as, more recently, a coach of the juniors, was diagnosed with a glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) brain tumour in 2018. He raised £3,500 for Brain Tumour Research last year with a silent disco.
Frustrated at the lack of cricket and wanting to join in on Richard’s support for Brain Tumour Research, the club hit upon the distance of 1,749km because the club was founded in 1749.
Richard, who has undergone surgery twice, radiotherapy and recently began his third different type of chemotherapy, ran 5k on the day, while his sons Charlie and Sam ran 10k and his wife Liz completed a 20k walk.
Club skipper Piers Cottee-Jones helped to drive the fundraising effort and walked in a loop round London clubs, Lord’s - Home of Cricket - and The Oval – a distance of 20k.
Richard said: "I wanted to put on record my thanks to the committee and all the members of Bearsted Cricket Club for organising this incredible event.
"To see the club pulling together for this cause, which is basically about me, is very humbling and shows the quality of people within the club.
"Help us make a difference and get closer to a cure by donating to our page.”
