The biggest ever international study into global cancer survival was recently published in medical journal The Lancet.
Compared with 27 other EU nations’ cancer survival rates, the UK was 21st for 5-year brain tumour survival.
The report showed 72,000 UK citizens living with brain tumours between 2000-2014 have just a 26.3% chance of surviving five years.
The UK also has worse brain tumour survival than the USA, Canada, Israel and some Caribbean nations.
This data shows just how far the UK is falling behind other countries in terms of brain tumour survival and emphasises the pressing need to increase research funding to this devastating disease, which currently receives just 1% of the national spend on cancer research.
The study, which was coordinated by the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, also found that the cost of treating all cancers globally was more than $300 billion a year (approximately £210 billion).
