Our Member Charity Astro Brain Tumour Fund is hosting its biggest annual fundraising event in October – it’s thirteenth annual Norfolk Family Walk for brain tumours. Gaining popularity year by year, the event offers a choice of distances – one, three, six or 10 miles to suit all ages and abilities. It is being held at Holkham Hall Estate, north Norfolk, on Sunday 6 October 2019 from 10am to 4pm. There is a registration fee of £5 (children walk free) with participants raising money for the brain tumour charity of their choice.
Among those walking once again this year is Rod Barrett who said: “We started going more than 10 years ago when we did this lovely walk with our late niece Gemma. Gemma had already been diagnosed with a brain tumour but you would never have known. She was an inspiration; and she still is. It is now an opportunity for family and friends to come together, to remember and to support the charity that Gemma herself favoured.”
Astro Brain Tumour Fund was founded by Katie Sheen after Paul Chamberlain, her sister’s husband, was diagnosed with a low-grade astrocytoma in December 2000 aged 30. Katie decided to launch her own charity due to the lack of research into low-grade tumours in the UK. Katie retired from the charity in January 2019, leaving present trustees Mary and Robbie Burton, Linda Rickford, Angela Scrutton plus new trustees Teresa Jordan and Kathleen Ferry looking forward to a bright and hopeful future carrying on the invaluable work of the charity. Katie is now Research Manager at Brain Tumour Research.
