The mother of an eight-year-old brain tumour patient has described the joyful moment she was reunited with her school friends.
Katie Paterson was diagnosed with a medulloblastoma brain tumour in December 2020. She has been through two surgeries and radiotherapy, and is now undergoing a gruelling course of chemotherapy.
Katie returned to school for the first time in nine months, where she met her new teachers and spent time with her school friends. She and her parents, Elaine and Graham, will continue to shield and home-school to protect Katie whilst her immune system is weakened.
Her mum, Elaine, said: “While others around us are celebrating the return to school we will continue to home school Katie as this is the best way to protect her. It was so wonderful for her to be with her school friends even just for a couple of hours and we can only hope that, in due course, she will be back in class full time.”
This Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, the family are working with Brain Tumour Research. They are sharing Katie’s story of hope to help highlight the devastation of a brain tumour diagnosis.
