The daughter of a man killed by a brain tumour has inspired her work colleagues to take part in a year of fundraising to help find a cure for the devastating disease.
Gavin Bateman, 60, from Sheffield, died from a glioblastoma (GBM) in May 2023, just five months after being diagnosed.
Now, his youngest daughter, Hannah Bateman, and her colleagues at finance, accounting, and HR recruitment agency, Sewell Wallis, which has offices in Leeds and Sheffield, have chosen Brain Tumour Research as their charity of the year.
Hannah, 28, said: “In memory of my dad and to honour his legacy, I am so proud Sewell Wallis is supporting me. The statistics for brain tumours are shocking; they kill more men under 70 than prostate cancer and more women under 35 than breast cancer.”
Gavin, also dad to Sarah, 31, experienced problems with his speech for 18 months before a private MRI scan revealed a golf ball-sized tumour in December 2022. He underwent radiotherapy and intensive chemotherapy but deteriorated quickly and died at home with his wife, Tricia, by his side.
Hannah said: “Dad dedicated a huge amount of time to others; kindness went all the way through him. I want to pay forward my dad’s charity work. Our goal is to raise awareness, share these startling statistics and raise funds to support Brain Tumour Research’s mission.”
Staff at the company kicked off their fundraising efforts by taking part in Wear A Christmas Hat Day last December and throughout 2024 they have planned a range of activities including a skydive and a five-a-side football tournament.
